Today is Earth Day. In my opinion, everyday should be Earth Day. It’s up to us to save our planet, do your part and reduce, reuse and recycle. Here are some things you can do that take little or no effort to help.

Here are some things that everyone can do:

1. Buy permanent items instead of disposables. Refrain from buying the paper plates, plastic utensils and plastic or paper cups. They may be quicker clean-up but you have less trash if you wash your dishes.

2. Buy and use only what you need and buy products with less packaging that you have to throw away.

3. Turn off the water while brushing your teeth.

4. Unplug your small appliances while not in use.

5. Turn off lights when not in the room.

6. When replacing appliances and light bulbs buy energy efficient.

7. Bring your travel coffee mug to the coffee shop to fill up.

8. Use cloth napkins or towels.

9. Reuse grocery bags as trash bags. They’re great for the small can in the bathroom.

10. Reuse jars and boxes.

11. Use your coffee grounds, egg shells and fruit and vegetable peelings in your compost for your garden.

Having a son is so different from having a girl.  I knew it was going to be, there’s a lot of worrying with both.  But with my son, my worries are with him hurting himself.  Trying to do tricks on his bike, he’s learning to use his skateboard, he wants to sign up for football.  The football worries me the most, he’s a big, solid boy definitely not in need of any testosterone boosters so I’m sure he can handle himself out on the field.  I don’t think I’m ready to see my little guy getting pushed down.

Tomorrow, April 22, is Earth Day.  What are you doing to celebrate?  Not everyone can convert to solar power and buy hybrid cars.  We can plant a tree in honor of Earth Day.  Give back what we take and make your place on Earth a prettier place.

It’s that time of year.  Time to move the furniture and grab those dust bunnies who have been hibernating, wash the fingerprints and dog snot off the windows.  Time to wash the curtains and steam the rugs.  Time to pack away the sweaters and bring out the tees.  It’s spring cleaning time!

After I met my parents and my kids at the train station yesterday, my brother and I took the kids to eat at Shady Glen, one of our favorite burger and ice cream spots. Shady Glen is celebrating 60 years this year, they still do everything as if it was 1948. It’s your typical diner of the 50’s, it’s like taking a step back in time. It’s all in the way they prepare The Bernice Original that makes it one of our favorites. They carefully place four (4) pieces of cheese on top of one burger while on the grill so that the cheese overhangs and gets grilled. It’s sooo yummy!

Not only do we love their burgers (I also love their coleslaw) their ice cream is simply among the best. They make their own, I usually like to go in the fall because they have one of my favorites, pumpkin pie ice cream and at Christmas I pick up a half gallon of their Christmas ice cream made with red and green cherries. The kids really liked their choices yesterday.

I’m seeing more highway billboards using digital signage these days. First they were pretty popular in many sports bars, scrolling the updated sports scores. Then you start seeing them pop up everywhere like grocery stores promoting several different products. In many movie theaters they’ve replaced the traditional promotional posters for upcoming movies.
